Starting with my hands

Starting with my hands

Before attending grad school for product design, I built retail installations as a carpenter. The work was physical, fast, and deeply collaborative. Starting with a pile of materials and ending with something memorable that stopped people in their tracks taught me to prototype quickly, solve problems with a team, and build for real and fleeting audiences. I've carried that mindset into every product I've worked on since.

Designing entire systems for people to touch

At Intersection, I designed an entire interactive wayfinding experience for Hudson Yards and a ticketing experience for The Empire State Building, 0-1. To test prototypes, I dressed as a building employee and fielded questions from confused visitors. Watching people navigate new experiences taught me that craft isn't polish. Its the process for building anything to survive the real world. That lesson shaped systems that now help millions of visitors each year.

Building businesses and wearing every hat

A grad school project unexpectedly became a business when a friend and I launched Game of Phones on Kickstarter, learned how to manufacture, packed boxes in our homes, and eventually landed it on shelves at Walmart, Target, and Barnes & Noble. Building that and then Different Puzzles meant learning every job that stood between an idea and a customer, a lesson that still shapes how I design.

Bolstering the foundation of existing software

At Buildertrend, I led a design team that helped modernize complex financial workflows inside a legacy platform. When the team debated competing directions, I prototyped both, planned research, and let users decide. This approach led on-time loan payment to increase from 62% to 79% while cutting completion time from more than five days to under two.

Toast, the next new venture

Looking back, the domains have changedconstruction, retail, public spaces, paymentsbut the work has stayed the sameLearn a new problem, build quickly, test with real people, improve relentlessly. That's exactly why Toast's New Ventures team stands out to me. It's a chance to build something new alongside a small, ambitious team solving real-world problems where physical and digital products meet. That's the kind of work I've spent my career chasing.
