Overview

This startup is tackling climate change by "creating a market-transforming solution to accelerate building decarbonization and adaptation in existing multifamily buildings." In order to do this they are becoming a hub of information about better and sustainable building practices and opportunities for builders.

Role & Employer

Contract Lead Product Designer for a stealth mode climate change startup

Challenge: The platform contains large proposals of detailed financial information about rebates and subsidies for sustainable construction and building upgrades, all of which need to be easily digested and compared.

Builders need to review top line savings as well as details of each program in order to understand what is applicable to their projects and where they can create the biggest impact. The original design didn’t have consistent interaction patterns, UI, or clear flows for users to quickly navigate, digest, or manage information on the platform.

Solution: I reworked the platform information architecture to improve UX flows and redesigned various experiences, including UI and visual design.

I established a regular design grid to keep content aligned, created a clearer IA, cleaned up visual design, and established intuitive interaction patterns. With improved interaction and visual design hierarchy, a user can now understand the information on the page and navigate it faster.

The redesigned user flows accommodate various user types with different permissions, whereas before it only allowed for one. It creates easier access to key screens in the flow and happier paths to the main actions on the platform.

With these new flows and connections, the platform has a clear hierarchy of information and can become more equitable for all users.

I redesigned the main experience on the platform using the new visual and interaction design patterns in combination with research of sites like Home Depot and Lowes (experiences the main user would be familiar with). The Scopes of Work Experience needed to clearly display a long list of scopes and allow users to compare up to 3 at one time. The final design situates up to 3 scopes of work side by side with comparing information aligned in a row for easy scanning and comparison.

By creating a consistent, friendlier, and more intuitive visual and interaction design language, each page and the overall platform became more welcoming and easier to navigate.
