Overview

Hudson Yards is a newly developed neighborhood in New York City containing residential, office, cultural, hospitality, and retail spaces. I led the design of a wayfinding interface for kiosks placed throughout the development.

Hudson Yards Wayfinding

Role & Employer

Lead designer for Intersection completing research, development, initial designs, and testing. I managed the visual designer and engineer for implementation.

Challenge: As a entirely new development with mixed use space, the Hudson Yards kiosk serves a variety of users with many needs, goals, and knowledge of the neighborhood. The challenge was to build an interface that elevates the experience of the space through navigation and contextual information.

Solution: The resulting design is an intuitive support system that provides effortless guidance throughout the Hudson Yards campus and drives traffic and sales for all of its businesses and experiences. It serves as a dynamic utility, working in concert with other digital and static signage by providing information on retailers, residences, offices, attractions, and public spaces.

It was important to distill the common needs of all user types and how the kiosk could serve them no matter where they are on the campus. I also needed to pay close attention to the location of UI elements so that the kiosk would get their attention, provide an intuitive path for their finger(s), and be comfortable for a user of any height or in a wheelchair.

At every stage within the design process I tested our progress with the team, coworkers, and end users to lead us to the most intuitive experience. I spoke to nearly 100 people in test sessions and field observations where I asked about preferences, expectations, and desires, and tested concepts, wireframes, UX, and visual designs.

Kiosks are now placed throughout the Hudson Yard Campus, serving as contextual navigation and information tools to anyone. With a couple of taps, a user can see where they are in Hudson Yards and quickly navigate to information or directions that can be passed to a mobile device by scanning a QR code.
